Extending Contracts

So I have a bunch of guys with 1-yr contracts. I guess the players decide during the next sim, so to control my finances I have to make one offer to one player, wait to see if he accepts in the next sim, then make another offer (if he rejects) or move on to the next player (if he accepts). That would take a whole bunch of sims to complete. Alternatively I could decide to make all my offers in one sim, but what if I only want to sign Player X or Player Y, but not both?

Predicting the re-signing players isn't very difficult, he will accept what he is asking for or better (on the rare occasion that he doesn't it's a bug so let me know if that ever happens), and will reject anything less than what he asks for. If he asks for a 1-year deal and you make it 2 and don't change any of the defaults, he'll definitely accept that because the bonus will double from his asking.

Now, if the player signed the contract in the current year, you can't renegotiate him, he has to be at least in the 2nd year of his contract.

I will usually try to enter the offseason with everyone signed to the next year unless their future is less than 40-50. You can make a 2-year offer with a minimal bonus to most bubble players (many will not ask for a bonus at all but you have to offer a bonus to do more than one year) that won't hurt too much if you have to cut them next year.

Thanks for the quick response. One more question: When exactly do my expiring players leave my team? In reading all the help info, I am inferring that it happens after the championship game, so the last chance to re-sign players in MFN2 would be the 12/24 sim?

12/20 2014 Conference Championship Midweek
12/21 2014 Conference Championship
12/23 2014 League Championship Midweek
12/24 2014 League Championship
12/25 2014 End of Season
12/26 2015 Free Agency Week 1

The 12/25 End of Season sim will be the last chance you have to re-sign your players. That will be the sim where anyone who you don't have signed will become free agents.

During the early free agency, those players will actually stay listed on your roster. In the roster filter, there is an option to display "no current or pending contracts" that only appears during early FA - players listed there are players that you had on your roster in the previous season, but are not under contract - and so are available for anyone to bid on. They will finally disappear from your roster when the draft starts.

I plan to write a blog entry with details on this but there are a few updates to the contract negotiation process that I just pushed to the Beta league, and will roll out to the other leagues once the Beta league has gone through a free agency session with the new process. It gives you more control over what the offer will be, everything else stays the same - but I want to make sure when I write the blog entry that it has this new contract offer form. I'm glad you asked this question though because I don't know that I would have thought to include this info.

Where exactly do I go to resign these players? I only see the option to cut them.

If you only see an option to cut a player, he was probably signed in the current season - and you can't extend 1-year contracts, you have to let them go through free agency. Any players that were signed to a 2-year contract or longer will have the same "contract" button that a free agency player has once they are no longer in the first year of their contract.

Ahh. Thanks for the explanation.
