Re: Mysterious Stat

I always wondered, when looking at the Team Stats in a league, why it was that the Penalties/Game stats, listed for the all the teams in a league, didn't equate to the # of Penalties/Game as listed for those teams opponents.
Are these teams playing some other opponents outside of their league?

For instance, in one league, last year's Penalty/Game stats indicate 4.9/game for the top team, and 2.6/game for the least penalized team. However, for their opponents, these numbers are 1.8 max and 0.9 min.

Who are these opponent teams who are committing so few penalties? Are they in some foreign league in another galaxy or dimension? Shouldn't the total number of penalties per game, for all a league's teams as whole, equal the number of penalties per game for all of their opponents as a whole? Why are all the teams committing so many more penalties than the opponents?

Just a question. :)

I put this out there many moons ago but as far I know it was never answered.

I'm pretty sure the number you are looking at is the average penalties committed by teams 'against" that team.

So team A may be committing 4 penalties on average, but teams that play against team B commit 2 penalties on average, etc.

So the numbers are showing you how many penalties you are committing on average, and how many penalties on average occur from teams who are playing against you specifically.

Except it isn't, if that was the case the two columns should balance out.

I think what it shows is the penalties commited by your offense in one column and your defense in the second column.

I agree it's badly headed or its a glitch in the recording, similar to the glitch in recording punts that bounce out on the sidelines. This leads to punters occasionally having a better net punting yards than gross - which is almost impossible to achieve, akin to the returner running backwards.
