Re: Rules and Plays

Issue
As much as I'd like to brag about my gameplanning skills, I have none.

I've set rules up, but it can sometimes be difficult to see what the rules can trigger, which has caused many an embarrassing mistake.

Rationale

I think this proposal could help encourage people to gameplan better, rather than just copying; it's easy this way to see that a rule you expected didn't fire because you selected no plays that matched it, for example. You can see, without finding your match compromised, that a rule you expect to use heavily against an opponent, only has one play that can be selected, making you predictable.

Suggestion

Provide a solution where a GM can see the play(s) that can be triggered by a specific rule.

Possible Solutions
Full

Provide an additional section / tab relating to rules. Two parts, one offence, one defence.

Example of this for Offence (defence is obviously similar).

Offence area contains a dropdown box and a list of plays. Each checkdown box is populated with the name of each rule for type (offence or defence). The list of plays region contains the names of ALL plays currently selected in your Offensive Plays section - this filters out plays you can't possibly use. So if you've selected 13 offensive plays, only those 13 plays are listed.

When you select a rule from the dropdown box, then the plays that rule can trigger are then highlighted within the list of plays. If 4 plays match the rule, then those 4 are highlighted.

Partial

Add "Matching plays" attribute to the existing rules. This then gets displayed alongside existing parameters, providing a count of plays the rule can trigger without enumerating all.

Implementation issues

The coding for this would ignore most of the rule section - time, position, distance, for example are irrelevant. For offence, the game would just need to look at the rule play type and personnel. Where the value is > 1 for each play type and personnel, look at the corresponding selected offensive plays to find matching plays. For defence, consider personnel, secondary and linebackers.

Try "view plays". It seems this is all you're asking for, and it's already there.

I get what you're saying, and I've asked JDB about this and he mentioned it's probably gonna be added down the line.

I'd love to know how many times my rules triggered in on a particular game, and the success/yardage of each.

I'd like to see a quick breakdown of estimated play calls with the current rulesets and play selection. Not showing the yardage or anything just the number of times the play would be called vs a selected recent opponent or opponent based on their last game against you. This should enable tweaking so you are not overusing or under using plays and should be a quick tabulation with minimal server strain since it's simply matching vs a game/games already run and saved to the server. It also wouldn't play spoiler by getting too specific to the point you could guarantee wins if your opponent didn't drastically change their game plan. It'd only show number of times called on average.
