injuries

Sardean asked a question about injuries. One team i have was getting 5 injuries a game. So i did a little research.

nfl injuries Not sure if this need adjusting or not

As you can see nfl avg injuries are going up over time.I would think if we had a middle for injuries per game we would be fine.

2015

The league numbers also dispute the anecdotal notion (held by much of their workforce) that Thursday games are bad for your health, with an average of 4.8 injuries per Thursday games last year compared to 6.9 injuries per game on Sundays and Mondays.

2010

The NFL players union says the average number of injuries has risen during the 2010 season.the NFLPA says injuries increased from 3.2 to 3.7 per week per team and the share of players injured increased to 63 percent compared to a 2002-09 average of 59 percent.

The report also shows that 13 percent of all injuries required players to be placed on injured reserve this season, compared to an average of 10 percent for 2002-09. The union says that indicates the injuries which are occurring are more serious than in past years.

What constitutes an injury?

If a LB breaks his finger, but keeps playing, does that count?
If someone pulls a muscle and misses a few plays, but then returns, does that count?

The study is based on missing game time.

Certain positions are more prone one way or the other. Losing multipule centers or QB's is much less likely than say RB, WR,LB, and DB. Like 6 times less.

I hoping someone can answer some questions. I'm curious.

In the NFL, if a team has 8 players injured enough to be out for the game (but not on IR), how do they make up the 46 man active roster?

Are they not required to have 46 active like we are, and just play with 45 or less?

Does the "emergency" QB count towards the 46 active or 53 total roster spots?

Thanks

This is the only question I think I can answer with any certainty.

Don't they generally use players off the practice squads to fill temporary holes in the line-ups?

The Redskins found a way........Look up the body bag game. It does happen even in real life. At least you had a few days to prepare. Consider your self lucky.

No, practice squad players are essentially free agents who practice with the team - they can be signed to an active roster by any team. An NFL team will cut some depth to sign a player to fill injured players (think cutting a 45-rated DL to sign a 45-rated RB because you are down to 1 RB), or will just play players who are injured - which, by midseason, is usually going to be any player who has had meaningful playing time.

Remember, "probable" players are expecting to play, questionable players can play if you don't have depth, and doubtful players are ones that you probably want to deactivate - but if a player is not "out," you can still play them and might even put them deeper in your depth chart than they would be if they were healthy to reduce their playing time.
