Re: Nostalgic Football League

Have posted about this in the DFL and originally the AFL was supposed to be a "throwback" style league to the 40s. Think it might be better to try one from scratch with some additional rules to make the game more like it was back in the 30s through 50s. Like having a rule where you have to have a minimum number of 2 way players. Fatigue setting must be a minimum 60 or higher (they didnt sub much if at all back then). Roster has a max number of players at 46, lower if JDB could set that up, to reflect roster sizes from that period. Pay was pennies back then compared to now, so that would be good if JDB could change that for a special league. I know that he has the idea for old style football on his "list" for the future.

Give it a like or post /comment in this thread to support the creation of a nostalgic league, thoughts and ideas on rules and settings and anything else would be real helpful. Personally, I think it would be fun and interesting to have a significant variation of the game. Below is a HOFer from that era, he was a great FB and DT! Can you name him? Look at the mug on him, wonder how many times he broke his nose! He would not have been a guy that you wanted to have to line up across from.

This has my interest...I've never been a fan of "themed" leagues that are not football related (no disrespect intended to their Admins/Owners). As for the chap pictured, I'm not that old...so I'm afraid I'd have to google LOL

The MAN!!!!!!!!!! However, he was never a professional player. Probably due to the fact that there were VERY few pro leagues in the early 1900's. The game was largely college based I think.

Maybe that is another idea on top of grandadb's....would a nostalgic league (in his vision) be just subject to Pro ? I'd love to see the 40's Notre Dame teams represented.

Just a thought.

I did a report on him in college over 20 years ago. More of a guess . My favorite really old player is Jim thorpe, but that would have been too easy . There was a story of nagurski breaking a cement wall in a game. Something like that . He was a beast among men for that time. Like a center playing fb now. Abnormally gifted for his size.

I've googled this...I knew that the Cards were the oldest Pro team...and I'm a big NYG's fan...so...

Who were the original 8 teams in the NFL?

There is no “original 8 teams” because the NFL was established with only 5 teams. They were the Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and New York Giants.

My best guess is mid 1920's...although the Cards go back before the NFL(?)
