More control over Player Progression

I think it is time to let our position coaches actually impact the position they coach. I believe a good way to do this would be to use the idea that after every 4 games players can gain Non-Physical attribute points. I think something as simple as (VolatilityConsideration) * (CoachRatingConsideration) resulting in small (-1-3pts perhaps?) changes would result in a better representation of players learning from their coaches. Age could also come into play here.

The fact that good coaches can make players better also increases their value to the game which seems to be very little as it stands.

The player progression is driven by the coaches, if you have a poor coaching staff your players will not progress as quickly as if you have a superior coaching staff.

But where they end up will be the same regardless, correct?

If a player is going to end up +20 or -20 when he is fully developed, that will happen regardless of the coaching staff. The coaches don't have any impact on this at all if my understanding is correct.

Ah, I understand - that would be a nice update.

By selecting no coaches at times....I have had guys retire before maxing out. Small like 96/100.

You'll always have coaches once the games start. The Ai will fill your coaching vacancies for you if you don't.

I've let that happen with position coaches because sometimes it's not worth the trouble to sort through the bottom of the barrel coaches just to find the "best" remaining TE coach, etc.

I feel like if we could essentially coach players up a little faster you would actually be able to get starter/situational players in the later rounds because you invested the time in them and it wouldn't be left up to just a random spin. Currently it seems like most progression gets done in one shot during camp and very little happens during the season which seems a bit off.

Actually the training camp progression is equivalent to a full season of progression, so you should see a similar amount of movement during the entire season as you do in the training camp stage.

Okay I guess I never really noticed that. I still think basing individual attribute growth off of the corresponding coach for a player would be a nice addition and add a bit to the realism of the sim. Maybe even go so far as then removing their impact bonus from the actual sim as well and leave those just for coordinators and the Head coach.

Adding a learning stat in this situation might be nice too. For example players with high learning will be able to learn beyond their would be cap up to their coaches limits. For example a player with 100 learning would be able to learn all the way up to their coaches limit vs a player with say 50 would only be able to learn up to half their coaches limit in the stat.

So a player with a coach with 90 in the stat and their normal max would be 30 (not uncommon for late round players) would be for 100 learning 90 in the stat 50 learning would reach 45. A player with 33 or less would only reach their 30 limit. Players with 0 learning would be unable to receive extra growth from coaches and would basically act as they do now and perhaps grow to potential a little slower than players with high learning.

You could perhaps do an average of the coaches to do their stat or as mentioned above remove the in game bonus for position coaches and leave that to head coach and coordinators and position coach determines growth (or at least a significant portion of it).

This would make the game a lot more realistic and engaging as you have a little more control over your team. You hear it on all levels of the sport that this or that team can take a chance on a player lacking because they have a coach who can teach it. Think the QB guru coaches or the Seahawks offensive line coach who has a lot of press lately for turning bad lineman into solid players.
