I wonder if its possible to somehow have a loyality /greed factor to affect signing FA's.

When you release players, it affects other potential FA's attitudes towards considering your future offers. If you sign and release a very loyal player before his contract is up a hidden factor goes against you on signing other players. The more loyal a player is, the more he cares. A real greedy player could care less. And if you hang on to a player throughout his contract, the factor goes in your teams favor. If a player is with you throughout his career until his retirement it is a factor bonus.

This is a cool idea, I'm going to put it in the list to think on. I have some items in the works on a player-by-player basis but hadn't thought about having the way you treat one player possibly affecting other players' opinions of you.

Gamesmanship is the use of dubious methods to win or gain a serious advantage in a game or sport. It has been described as "Pushing the rules to the limit without getting caught, using whatever dubious methods possible to achieve the desired end". Wikipedia

The wiki definition of gamesmanship would indicate that it is underhand/unsportsmanlike but not cheating.

Completely agree. I sign players to help my team, but occasionally those players don't work out for me. The NFL doesn't force you to keep a player. You should be able to sign and trade as desired.

Even if someone is signing and trading, it does them as much harm as good because they are eating the bonus which is usually large for decent players. They are taking a chance on rookie draft picks that may not pan out as well.

If the cap situation was different then I would agree but most teams have more cap space than they know what to do with. Player salaries need to keep rising a bit still for the cap to be the limit on this sort of stuff.

Its with in the rules so I am not calling anyone out as cheating. I just think its not good for the spirt of a roster building sim to have the loop hole that is mostly a result of the cap sim not being quite up to speed with the other aspects of the game.

Umm .. He was caught. You let us know at what point you'd consider it cheating.

Who are you referring to? If its Dark Rogue my post obviously doesn't apply to him as he was cheating not using gamesmanship which is within the rules but not sporting.

I'll give you a situation I was in. A DT was available and another owner outbid me .. by signing him to a max contract. Roughly 7 mill a year/10 mill bonus ... 6 years. He then put the player up for trade a few days later I traded a high second for him. Why? I wanted the player ... The other owner had to eat all that bonus money ... He's an 11 year vet so I don't have to pay him anything if he retires. It's a gamble you take ... Hopefully I get a couple of good years out of him.

Edit .. Just checked and he's out with an IR option ... that's my luck in a nutshell ;-)

My apologies ... I thought you were trying to justify his actions. Lol. I'm normally sleeping at this time of day.

No problem. I'd be one of the last people to justify any cheats actions. I want him and any other cheats banned. :)

Renegotiations should be going up slowly, over the last couple of months the amount players are requiring to stay (if they are > 60 or so) has gone up. It used to be easy to renegotiate and lower your best player contracts, now it should be getting harder to do it without seeing an increase. It will just take a few seasons to get those renegotiations to come due, but I'm hopeful it will close that loophole a little bit and if it doesn't I'll tweak it further. The flip side of course is that it will become harder to keep those really good players.

Also I'm currently working on some code that will cause the players to go to FA if they aren't getting enough playing time, which will happen if you have too much depth. Hopefully the first version of that will be in the next game engine version.

Saw some questions about trades, yes I did make some trades with those other accounts I had (not in every league but in a few). If JD wishes for further action to be taken in regards to those instances then he is free to pm me or make a decision on those. In the particular instance of MFN-27 outside of one trade that ended up being a 2nd overall pick that was actually all just a really strong free agency class that allowed me to totally reboot the vast majority of that roster (the same exact thing I was able to do in the Fake Pigskin league). One thing I've noticed is that after year 2 of a league, if a lot of people don't renew or resign their players then the free agent pool tends to be really strong.
